Transferring Your Out‑of‑State or Military CDL to Florida
Already Have a CDL from Another State?
Florida offers reciprocity for valid out‑of‑state CDLs. You can exchange your license without additional testing except :
If you have a Hazmat (H) endorsement , you must reapply in Florida. This includes a new TSA background check, fingerprinting, and passing the Florida hazmat knowledge test.
Your out‑of‑state license must be current and not suspended or revoked.
Steps:
Bring your current CDL and proof of Florida residency to a DMV office.
Surrender the out‑of‑state license.
For hazmat, complete the TSA threat assessment and take the hazmat knowledge test.
Military CDL *Skills Test Waiver
If you gained commercial driving experience in the military, you may skip the skills test entirely. Here’s how:
You must have been on active duty within the last 90 days OR within 120 days before applying .
Obtain the Certification for Waiver of Skill Test for Military Personnel form, completed by your commanding officer.
Pass all required knowledge tests and endorsement exams for the CDL class you want.
The whole process (from separation to issuance) must be completed within 120 days of leaving the service.
*No skills test means no vehicle rental hassle—use your military experience to get a head start on a civilian career.
