Transferring Your Out‑of‑State or Military CDL to Florida

Already Have a CDL from Another State?

Florida offers reciprocity for valid out‑of‑state CDLs. You can exchange your license without additional testing except :

  • If you have a Hazmat (H) endorsement , you must reapply in Florida. This includes a new TSA background check, fingerprinting, and passing the Florida hazmat knowledge test.

  • Your out‑of‑state license must be current and not suspended or revoked.

Steps:

  1. Bring your current CDL and proof of Florida residency to a DMV office.

  2. Surrender the out‑of‑state license.

  3. For hazmat, complete the TSA threat assessment and take the hazmat knowledge test.

Military CDL *Skills Test Waiver

If you gained commercial driving experience in the military, you may skip the skills test entirely. Here’s how:

  • You must have been on active duty within the last 90 days OR within 120 days before applying .

  • Obtain the Certification for Waiver of Skill Test for Military Personnel form, completed by your commanding officer.

  • Pass all required knowledge tests and endorsement exams for the CDL class you want.

  • The whole process (from separation to issuance) must be completed within 120 days of leaving the service.

*No skills test means no vehicle rental hassle—use your military experience to get a head start on a civilian career.
