If you’re planning to drive large trucks, buses, or vehicles carrying hazardous materials in Florida, you’ll need a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Here’s exactly who needs one, plus the basic eligibility rules.
Basic Eligibility at a Glance
Age: 18 for intrastate (within Florida) driving; 21 for interstate driving or hazmat transport.
Current License: Must hold a valid Florida Class E driver’s license.
Medical: Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Vision: Pass a standard vision screening (20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses).
Residency: Be a Florida resident (see proof documents below).
When a CDL Is Required
You must obtain a CDL to operate any of the following:
Class | Vehicle Type | Weight / Passenger Rule |
| Class A | Combination vehicles (tractor‑trailers, tankers with trailers) | Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ≥ 26,001 lbs, towing unit > 10,000 lbs |
| Class B | Single vehicles (large buses, straight trucks) | GVWR ≥ 26,001 lbs |
| Class C | Vehicles carrying 16+ passengers (including driver) OR placarded hazmat | GVWR < 26,001 lbs |
Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) Rules
1. Pass all applicable knowledge tests for your desired class and endorsements.
2. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test.
3. The CLP is valid for one year; you must obtain your CDL before it expires.
Proof of Florida Residency (for CLP & Original CDL)
Bring one of the following documents when applying:
A current Florida Class E license or ID card held for more than 6 months
A lease agreement in your name, in place for more than 6 months
A current residential mortgage or deed signed more than 6 months ago
A Florida Voter Registration Card
A statement of domicile (section 222.17, Florida Statutes)
A homestead tax exemption filing on property in Florida
Language Note: All knowledge and skills tests are administered in English. Interpreters are not permitted.
DOT Medical Exam Requirements
Before you can get a CDL, you must pass a DOT physical exam conducted by a certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry. The exam checks:
Vision (20/40 minimum, 70° field of vision)
Blood pressure / cardiovascular health
Hearing (forced whisper test)
General fitness (no disqualifying conditions)
After passing, you’ll receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card). You must submit this to the Florida DMV and self‑certify your driving type (intrastate or interstate).
Pro tip: Get your medical card early—it’s required before you take the skills test.
