Avanti Driving - Adult & Senior Drivers

I already have my license but haven't driven in several years because I lived in the city and a car was not needed. Will they start me from absolute zero?

It really depends on what driving skills you have retained. Avanti Driving offers refresher courses that are tailored to your current driving skill level. An Avanti instructor will evaluate your skills and create a plan, which might mean starting with basic vehicle control in a quiet area.

I learned to drive in a different country. Will they help me un-learn those habits to pass the US road test?

Yes. Many schools - such as ours - have instructors experienced with international license holders. They will help you understand specific local or state rules that may differ from your home country.

Can I take a course that specifically teaches me how to drive a large SUV or a truck?

It depends on the school. Most schools use standard sedans, smaller SUV's or small cars for lessons. Some may offer specific training, but it's best to call and ask. The most important task to do after your lesson is to: Practice, practice and more practice. We can not emphasize that enough.

Is it awkward to be an adult in a car with a teenager for a lesson?

Reputable schools have adult programs that are separate from the teen curriculum. Our instructors are professional and adapt their teaching style to the student's age and needs. We provide professional driving lessons for teens, adult beginners, seniors, nervous drivers, and licensed drivers needing refresher training, with lessons tailored to each student's age, experience, and individual goals.

Can the instructor test me on my medication side effects to see if I'm safe to drive?

The goal of a refresher course is to rebuild confidence, allowing you to handle typical driving tasks, like a trip to the doctor, independently and safely.

Yes and no. In Florida many insurance companies offer discounts for completing a 4 hour state certified accredited driver education program (16-54 years of age), or, a 6-hour hour state certified accredited driver education program (55+ years of age), regardless of age. However, some insurance companies offer yearly "loyalty discounts" which provides additional savings without needing to complete a defensive driving course. So it's best that you call your agent or broker prior to registering.

How do I safely navigate roundabouts that weren't common when I learned to drive?
  1. Instructors are familiar with modern traffic patterns like roundabouts and can provide specific coaching on how to enter, yield, and exit them safely.

If I only need a refresher on highway driving and parking, can I book a custom session and not a full course series?

Absolutely yes! We offer flexible, a la carte lessons for adults and seniors. You can purchase single lessons or a starter series session that specifically focuses on specific weaknesses without committing to a full new driver/teen program.

Will taking a defensive driving course lower my insurance rates?
How do I handle "road rage" triggers? Do they teach mental strategies, or just physical driving?

This is a common challenge. Professional instruction provides a structured, low-pressure environment to build the active awareness and control needed to drive, rather than just being a passenger.

I use ride-shares all the time. How do I transition from being a passenger to being in control of the traffic flow?

Instructors generally cover techniques for managing emotional states and anxiety behind the wheel, such as remaining calm and using relaxation techniques. The BGE (Blind Spot and Glare Elimination) method also helps eliminate blind spots and glare, reducing stress on the driver.

Will they give me an honest, objective opinion on whether I should still be driving?

Yes, instructors can teach you to use a system of mirrors (properly adjusted) in combination with selective head checks to improve your situational awareness. When mirrors are properly adjusted, they provide detailed information about vehicles around you, though blind spots are not completely eliminated.

I feel like my reaction time has slowed. Will the instructor be patient with my pace?

Yes, many schools have specific "mature driver programs" for seniors. Instructors are trained to be patient and to set a pace that is comfortable for you. We've instructed drivers from 15 to 90+ years old.

Can they teach me how to use all the new tech in my new car?

All lessons are conducted in our state certified school's vehicles, which are often newer and have modern technology. The instructor can explain how to use features like backup cameras, lane assist, and blind-spot monitors safely while driving and the importance of not relying on them. Why? Because those are "mechanical" features that can break or malfunction.

How can I adjust my seat and mirrors to compensate for my limited neck mobility?

An instructor can demonstrate proper seat and mirror adjustments to minimize blind spots and maximize your field of view, offering alternative techniques to compensate for physical limitations.

I have trouble turning my head to check blind spots. Are there alternative techniques (like using mirrors effectively)?

Yes, Avanti offers driver evaluations for seniors. This is a non-medical assessment to help you and your family make an informed decision about your driving fitness.

Will a brush-up course help me feel confident enough to drive to the doctor's office without my spouse?

Yes. Many schools offer weekend lessons to accommodate busy schedules.

Do they offer shorter lessons (e.g., 45 minutes) because a full hour is too tiring for me?
Do I need driver training if I'm over 18?

No, instructors cannot provide medical advice. You should always consult with your doctor or pharmacist about how medications may affect your driving ability

This varies by school. Some typically offer 1-hour sessions , but the standard lesson is often 90 minutes. It is best to call and ask for accommodations.

Can I take driving lessons if I already have a license and just want to brush up?

The FLHSMV does not require driver training to take the road test if you're over 18. However, you must complete the TLSAE-4-Hour First Time Driver course (reported directly to the FLHSMV), and take the beginner's written exam for your learner permit in order to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Many adults still take lessons to not only learn how to drive but, prepare for the road test.

Are weekend driving lessons available for seniors?

Absolutely Yes. This is not uncommon for licensed drivers who are unfamiliar with their new surroundings as a result of moving. Most schools provide professional driving lessons for licensed drivers needing refresher training, with all lessons tailored to each student's age, experience, and individual goals.

What should I do if I've been in a crash and am nervous about driving again?

No. Most schools - like Avanti Driving - are fully all-inclusive. They do not charge additional fees for certificates, fuel, insurance, or pickup and drop-off services—there are no hidden or surprise charges.

Do you charge additional fees for certificates, fuel, or insurance?

Absolutely, driving instruction training can help. Many students are encouraged by family or loved ones after having been involved in a crash. Instructors have a lot of experience here and can instill confidence in those that have lost it.

  5. Parental Consent Form – Minor Driver Applicant Form. (Parent Consent Form B). (https://www.flhsmv.gov/pdf/forms/71142.pdf ) If you are under 18 and are not married one parent or legal guardian must sign your license application. Step-parents may not sign unless they have legally adopted you.

  6. Certification of Minor Driving Experience Form (71143) (https://www.flhsmv.gov/pdf/forms/71143.pdf ) for a minor child to obtain a driver license.
