Florida CDL Classes & Testing

Each CDL class has specific test requirements. Below is exactly what you need to pass for Class A, B, or C.

Class A CDL – Combination Vehicles Vehicle rules: Operate trucks or truck combinations with GVWR ≥ 26,001 lbs, towing a unit > 10,000 lbs.

Knowledge Tests You Must Pass: - General Knowledge Test

• Combination Vehicles Test

• Air Brakes Test (if the vehicle has air brakes)

• Endorsement exams (if applicable: Hazmat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, etc.)

Skills Tests (3‑part):

1. Pre‑Trip Vehicle Inspection

2. Basic Vehicle Control (backing, parking, turning)

3. On‑Road Test (driving in traffic)

Class B CDL – Straight Trucks & Buses Vehicle rules: Single vehicles with GVWR ≥ 26,001 lbs.

Knowledge Tests: - General Knowledge Test

• Air Brakes Test (if equipped)

• Endorsement exams as needed

Skills Tests: Same 3‑part tests as Class A, but in a Class B vehicle.

Class C CDL – Small Hazmat or Passenger Vehicles Vehicle rules: Vehicles designed to transport 16+ passengers OR placarded hazmat, with GVWR < 26,001 lbs.

Knowledge Tests: - General Knowledge Test

• Air Brakes Test (if applicable)

• Required endorsement exams (Passenger (P) or Hazmat (H))

Skills Tests: Same 3‑part test, but the vehicle used must match the intended operation.

Air Brakes: When Do You Need This Test?

If the vehicle you drive is equipped with air brakes, you must demonstrate and pass successfully the Air Brakes Knowledge Test. Most Class A vehicles have air brakes, but some Class B and C vehicles may not. Check your training vehicle. NOTE: If you pass the test, your CDL will have a "no air brake restriction" (L restriction). If you skip it, you will not be able to drive any commercial vehicle with air brakes.
