Florida CDL Endorsements: Expand Your Driving Career

An endorsement on your CDL allows you to haul specialized cargo or passengers. The following endorsements can be added to Class A, B, or C licenses.

Endorsement , Code, What It Allows and Test Required

Hazardous Materials (H): Transport hazardous materials that require placards. Written exam + TSA background check

Tank Vehicle (N): Drive vehicles that transport liquids or gases in bulk tanks. Written exam

Passenger (P): Drive vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including driver). Written + skills test in a passenger vehicle.

School Bus (S): Transport pre primary, primary, or secondary school students. Written + skills test; must also have (P) endorsement.

Doubles/Triples (T): Pull double or triple trailers. Written exam; NOTE: Triple trailers are NOT allowed on Florida roads.

Tank/Hazmat Combination (X): Combination of H and N endorsements. Written exams for both, plus TSA check for hazmat |

Hazmat Endorsement: Extra Steps Required

Because of federal security rules, the (H) endorsement requires:

1. Passing the written hazmat knowledge test.

2. Completing a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security threat assessment (fingerprinting and background check).

3. Paying the TSA fee (currently around $86.50)
   

Once approved, your hazmat endorsement is valid for 5 years, but the background check must be renewed periodically.

The Passenger (P) endorsement requires a skills test in a passenger rated vehicle . If you’re also getting a School Bus (S) endorsement, you must take an additional skills test in a school bus.
